The Department of Social Work traces its roots back to 1946 when it was first established as National YWCA School of Social Work at Isabella Thouborn College, a reputed Women’s College in Lucknow. In 1947, the school relocated to Delhi, where it became affiliated with the University of Delhi in 1948 under the name " Delhi School of Social Work." In 1979, It was taken over by the University of Delhi in 1979, and currently known as Department of Social Work.

The department’s library, named the " B.S. Kumedan Library " in honour of the department’s first librarian, was established with the goal of providing easy access to educational resources. Its mission is to support and enhance academic learning by promoting education, facilitating knowledge access, and preserving educational materials for future generations.

The DSW Library plays a vital role in supporting the department's students, faculty, and non-teaching staff. It serves the needs of those enrolled in the master's and Ph.D. programs, providing resources that aid in research, coursework, and professional development. In addition, the library welcomes all members of the department community, including students, faculty, and staff, and strives to create a warm and inviting environment.

One of the library's distinctive features is its design, which prioritizes natural light to create an enriching atmosphere for studying, research, and reflection. It remains committed to serving the educational community and continues to be an invaluable resource for all those engaged in the pursuit of knowledge within the department.
